Black Buck OneBlack Buck One was the first of the Black Buck missions carried out by an RAF Vulcan bomber, supported by Victor tankers during the Falklands War. Black Buck One took place on April 30th to May 1st 1982. The Vulcan attacked Port Stanley airfield using twenty-one 1,000 lb bombs, damaging the runway and forcing the Argentines to withdrew their fast jets (including Mirage IIIs back to the mainland). Black Buck One was followed-up by a subsequent attack, Black Buck Two. Immediately following the Black Buck One strike by the Vulcan, nine Sea Harriers from HMS Hermes bombed Port Stanley airfield, and the small grass airstrip at Goose Green. This was the the raid described by BBC reporter Brian Hanrahan using the famous and memorable line "I'm not allowed to say how many planes joined the raid, but I counted them all out and I counted them all back." |
